A remarkably velvety red wine from Margaux

As a red wine produced in the Margaux appellation, Alter Ego de Palmer benefits from a 66 hectares vineyard planted on gravelly soil. The wine is aged in barrel (50% in new barrels) for 18 to 21 months. The blend of the 2016 vintage consists of 40% Merlot, 48% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Petit Verdot.

The beginning of the winter was mild, with bud-burst occurring one week ahead of time. The spring, humid and cool, slowed the growth of the vine and pushed the appearance of mildew. Despite the complex climatic conditions, the beginning of June saw optimal flowering. The dryness of the summer proved not enough to catch up the delay in the physiological cycle. The mid-véraison around August 10th predicted late harvests. The heat and drought of July and August raised worries about a block in grape ripening, but rain on September 13th revived the development of the grapes. It did not rain until harvest, which took place between October 3rd and 18th.

Palmer’s Alter Ego 2016 has powerful, extremely ripe tannins. The wine reveals a fantastic balance, with a more classic degree of alcohol than the previous great vintages and with beautifully structured tannins. This wine is remarkably velvety, a truly signature characteristic of the wines of Château Palmer. For consumption before 2025-2030.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
Blended of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 12% Petit Verdot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Alter Ego de Palmer opens with beautifully expressive notes of black cherries, fresh blackberries and redcurrants plus suggestions of menthol, dark chocolate, cloves and underbrush. Medium to full-bodied with a rich mid-palate and stacks of exuberant black and red fruits, it has a velvety texture and fantastically long finish.
