An exceptional Chilean Pinot Noir from the coastal Limarí Valley
The estate
Founded in 2002 by Guillermo Luksic, Viña Tabali represents the first modern winery established in the Limarí Valley, located in the Coquimbo region of northern Chile. The vineyard covers 151 hectares spread over three exceptional sites: Talinay, located 12 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean on marine limestone soils rare in Chile, Río Hurtado peaking at an altitude of 1,600 meters, and DOM in Maipo. Under the direction of Nicolas Luksic, the estate stands out for its exceptional minerality, the freshness brought by the camanchaca and a non-interventionist philosophy revealing the authentic expression of these extreme terroirs.
The vineyard
The Talinay Pai Pinot Noir comes from a very specific plot in the Talinay vineyard, located in the Limarí Valley. This 1.15-hectare plot is distinguished by its northern exposure and steep 30% slope, at an altitude of 150 meters and only 12 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean. The terroir rests on limestone soils from ancient marine terraces, porous and fractured, allowing for deep root exploration. The ungrafted vines, planted in 2012 at a very high density (12,500 plants per hectare), come from two massal selections from Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin in Burgundy. The site benefits from a very cool coastal climate with a constant sea breeze, maximum summer temperatures around 23.5°C and is located near the Fray Jorge National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage in the Coquimbo region is characterized by cool coastal weather conditions allowing for slow and gradual ripening of the grapes. The harvest was carried out on February 4th, 2 to 3 weeks later than in other Chilean coastal areas, testifying to the exceptional freshness of the site.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the Talinay Pai Pinot Noir 2020 were harvested manually in 20 kg boxes with meticulous bunch selection. Winemaking began with destemming 60% of the grapes, with the remaining 40% vinified as whole bunches. After a 7-day cold maceration at 8°C, alcoholic fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts in small stainless steel tanks at temperatures between 20 and 26°C. Gentle manual pump-overs were carried out, followed by a short post-fermentation maceration. Complete malolactic fermentation preceded 12 months of aging in French oak barrels from the Fontainebleau, Jupille, Bertrange, Tronçais and Allier forests. L
Grape variety
