Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Pouilly-Fuissé Village "Les Combes Vieilles Vignes" 2024 Verget
Tasting
Colour
The colour reveals a beautiful golden hue, enhanced by delicate silvery highlights.
Nose
The bouquet opens with aromas of ripe pear, golden apple and lemon blossom, subtly heightened by touches of almond and wet stone.
Palate
The palate opens smooth and generous, revealing bright flavours of peach, apricot and pineapple. A creamy texture with vanilla notes harmonises with a incisive minerality that structures the whole. The wine is round, complex and refined, energised by lively nuances of orange and passion fruit. The finish, taut and tense, offers smoky, spicy accents evoking saffron, pepper and Espelette pepper.
Food and wine pairing
This white wine pairs beautifully with refined seafood such as pan-seared scallops on a leek fondue, lobster or pike-perch with beurre blanc. It also pairs perfectly with delicate poultry, white meats in a light sauce, creamy pasta dishes, or a mushroom and goat cheese omelette.
Service and storage
The Pouilly-Fuissé Village "Les Combes Vieilles Vignes" 2024 shows fine aging potential and can be enjoyed until around 2034.
The elegance and precision of a great white Burgundy from Verget
The estate
Founded in 1990 by Jean-Marie Guffens and his wife Maine Guffens-Heynen, the négociant house Verget is based in Sologny, Burgundy (France). Born from the desire to buy the finest grapes rather than must, this house has built its reputation on uncompromising quality standards. Still owned by its founders, the estate is now run day-to-day by Julien Desplans. True to the philosophy that the finest grapes make the finest wines, Verget stands out for its rigorous selection of plots and its absolute mastery of pressing techniques, allowing the excellence of each terroir to shine through.
The vineyard
This Pouilly-Fuissé comes from old vines aged 70 years, benefiting from an ideal south and southeast-facing exposure. The terroir is characterised by predominantly limestone soils, dotted with pockets of clay and marl, giving the grapes a distinctive chalky minerality.
The vintage
2024 in Burgundy was marked by a cooler growing season, with particularly dry conditions in April and May in the Mâconnais. August turned out dry and sunny. Although imperfect flowering led to below-average yields, these weather conditions allowed for a harvest of healthy, concentrated grapes with lovely freshness.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the Pouilly-Fuissé Village "Les Combes Vieilles Vignes" 2024 were hand-harvested over three successive passes to ensure optimal ripeness. The winemaking process is distinguished by careful, meticulous pressing. The wine then ferments and undergoes about nine months of aging on the lees in barrels, less than a quarter of which are new oak, along with several rounds of bâtonnage to enrich its texture.
