Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Pouilly-Fuissé 1er cru "Sur la Roche" 2024 Verget
Tasting notes
Colour
Revealing a pale to medium yellow hue, this colour reflects the freshness of its vintage.
Nose
The bouquet opens with floral notes and fresh butter, evolving towards aromas of white peach and lemon zest. A mineral touch reminiscent of crushed oyster shell intertwines with subtle toasted nuances.
Palate
Taut and complex, the palate offers a fine concentration of citrus and stone fruit aromas. Its deeply mineral core, evoking chalk, is accompanied by delicate touches of almond blossom. The finish stands out for its remarkable freshness and beautiful saline length.
Food and wine pairing
This white wine pairs wonderfully with pan-fried white-fleshed fish or fish in creamy sauce, such as halibut or sole. It also enhances roasted poultry with mushrooms or herbs, grilled shellfish, as well as aged goat cheeses.
Service and storage
Endowed with a fine density and a solid structure, the Pouilly-Fuissé 1er cru "Sur la Roche" 2024 has significant aging potential that will allow it to develop an increasingly rich texture and aromatic complexity over the years in bottle.
The mineral expression of a great Burgundy terroir by Maison Verget
The estate
Founded in 1990 by the Belgian couple Jean-Marie and Maine Guffens, Maison Verget is a négociant house established in the Mâconnais, in Burgundy (France). Born from a desire to showcase the local terroirs, the estate stands out for its quest for truth and its concept of "wine of emotion," favouring the authentic expression of the vine. Today, Julien Desplans, an oenologist who joined the venture in 2006, heads the estate and continues this exacting philosophy, alongside Sophie Guffens, who represents the new generation of the family.
The vineyard
Classified as premier cru since 2020, the "Sur la Roche" climat is located in the commune of Vergisson, north of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. This exceptional terroir rises to around 375 metres in altitude on a 15% slope. Facing south-southeast, the vines—some planted in the 1940s and averaging over 80 years old—thrive on shallow soils made up of limestone with a hard rock subsoil, giving the grapes a natural concentration.
The vintage
The year 2024 proved particularly challenging. After warmer-than-average months of February and March, the growing cycle advanced rapidly. However, May through July were marked by cool temperatures and abundant rainfall. While August offered a sunny respite favouring ripening, September once again brought cool weather. Despite significantly reduced yields, rigorous sorting during the harvest made it possible to obtain berries of great freshness.
Winemaking and aging
To craft this Pouilly-Fuissé 1er cru "Sur la Roche" 2024, only first-press juice was isolated and selected. Vinification took place exclusively in horizontally arranged stainless steel tanks. Fermentation, carried out at naturally cool temperatures, continued until early November. The wine then underwent about eight months of aging on the lees in these same tanks, with regular light bâtonnage to enhance textural complexity.
Grape variety
This wine is made exclusively from Chardonnay.
