Description
Tasting Notes and Characteristics of the 50 Years Old Sherry Cask Gordon & MacPhail
Tasting
Nose
Generous and indulgent, it reveals great complexity. Aromas of stewed black fruits, cinnamon, milk chocolate and demerara sugar mingle with more mellowed notes of cigar box, beeswax and aged leather.
Palate
The attack is vibrant with notes of orange and black pepper, evolving towards a rich mid-palate marked by sweet dry tobacco, apple, milk chocolate and spices. The finish is long, full and remarkably well-balanced, leaving an elegant persistence of spices and oak.
Food pairings and tasting moments
Ideal at the end of a gourmet meal, this single malt pairs beautifully with chocolate and dried fruit desserts, such as a dark chocolate ganache or a candied fruit cake. It also accompanies aged cheeses such as Stilton or a 36-month Comté. For a more contemplative experience, it pairs perfectly with a light to medium cigar. Best enjoyed in a tulip or copita glass at room temperature, allowing it a few minutes to breathe.
Mixology
This exceptional spirit is not suited to mixology. It is strongly recommended to enjoy it neat, without artifice, or possibly with one or two drops of water to explore all its aromatic nuances.
Other characteristics
This Single Malt whisky is unpeated. It is bottled at 46% vol. and presented in a 70 cl format.
A Scotch whisky from Speyside of rare elegance by Macphail
Gordon & MacPhail: the art of independent bottling
Founded in 1895 in Elgin, in the heart of Speyside, the Gordon & MacPhail House is a true institution of Scotch whisky. Historically recognised as a pioneering independent bottler, the family-owned company has distinguished itself through its exceptional mastery of long-term maturation and its rigorous selection of bespoke casks. Today, ownership remains in the hands of the Urquhart family, with Neil Urquhart serving as interim Managing Director. A genuine "liquid library", the House holds stocks of extraordinary rarity. Beyond its merchant activity, it has also become a distiller by acquiring Benromach and creating The Cairn Distillery. Through its Macphail brand, whose original distillery remains a closely guarded secret, the company perfectly embodies its values of excellence, patience and transmission, offering connoisseurs expressions of unrivalled historical depth.
The well-kept secret of the 50 Years Old Sherry Cask Gordon & MacPhail
The 50 Years Old Sherry Cask Gordon & MacPhail is a liquid work of art that embodies the pinnacle of the brand's current range. This Scotch whisky single malt comes from the prestigious Speyside region, although the exact identity of its original distillery is deliberately kept secret by the House. This bold choice highlights the unique expertise of the NM (négociant) in selection and ageing, rather than the name of a specific producer.
Crafted exclusively from malted barley, this exceptional spirit has benefited from extended maturation of half a century. This extraordinary ageing took place entirely in sherry casks, made according to the exact specifications and rigorous requirements of the House. This bespoke approach ensures a perfect interaction between wood and distillate over five decades.
Bottled at 46% vol., an ideal strength to preserve its tension and aromatic richness, it is presented in an elegant wooden case. This bottle is intended for collectors and lovers of very old malts, offering a rare sensory experience where time, wood and sherry blend into absolute harmony.
