Roquette & Cazes is the product of a meeting between two friends and the know-how of these two combined to achieve a shared dream. Jorge Roquette, from Quinta do Crasto in Portugal, and Jean-Michel Cazes, from Château Lynch-Bages, combined their talents to produce very fine wines. This union gave rise to wines marked by the particular features of the Douro Valley and the typical style of Bordeaux from the Cazes family, which has been established on the Pauillac appellation for nearly a century.
The year 2016 opened with a winter that was particularly wet, but also hotter than usual. Summer was extremely hot and dry, but at the end of August, a rainy spell brought the grapes to a perfect state of ripeness. The weather conditions were optimal throughout the harvest. Both the red and white wines, as well as the ports produced from this vintage, are characterised by their superb colour, their deep aromas and their beautiful structure, which is elegant and balanced at the same time.
Winemaking and ageing
After the manual harvests, which were carried out very gently, the grapes were taken to the winery to begin a custom-made winemaking process. They were first carefully inspected on a sorting table, before being destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation was carried out in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature. Offloading occurred during fermentation to maximise contact with the must. Thanks to this French technique, the wine is concentrated, complex and full of elegance. Subsequently, it was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (70% new, 30% of one previous wine), then for 18 months in bottle in a temperature-controlled winery.
The 2016 Roquette & Cazes has a deep ruby colour.
The aromatic bouquet conveys an impressive freshness and complexity. The aromas of undergrowth and wild berries go wonderfully with floral notes.
The 2016 Roquette & Cazes is an elegant, full-bodied and generous wine. Its beautiful structure is based on fine and well-integrated tannins, balanced by notes of heath and wild fruits. The finish is balanced and persistent.
