Casa Ferreirinha : Reserva Especial 2007

Intense and complex, a magnificent Douro red wine

The estate

Owned by the Sogrape Group, one of the most important Portuguese wine producers, Casa Ferreirinha is synonymous with one word: outstanding. Founded in the 18th century by Bernardo Ferreira, the house is renowned for its in-depth knowledge of the Douro vineyards and for the quality of its wines. Casa Ferreirinha was the first winery in Portugal to produce non-fortified Douro red wines and has a worldwide reputation.

The wine

Produced in DOC Douro, Reserva Especial Casa Ferreirinha is a red wine from the Douro region, situated in the northern part of Portugal. Complex and rich with a classical style, this Portuguese wine was borne over 50 years ago. Still today, Reserva Especial is one of Casa Ferreirinha's signature wines and has built up the estate's reputation. This wine is only made during the finest years. From its creation until 2007, only 16 vintages have been declared.

The vintage

2007 was marked by a rainy start to the year, which enabled the vines and the soil to replenish their water reserves. Subsequently, the alternation between heavy temperatures and rainy episodes provided the grapes with a good ripening cycle. The harvest took place in the best conditions and thus promised to create a very fine wine.

Vinification and ageing

The vinification of the Reserva Especial Casa Ferreirinha was carried out at the Quinta da Leda, which has state-of-the-art facilities. Meticulously selected during the hand-picked harvest, the harvested grapes are vinified separately based on variety or blended together. Following destemming, the grapes are gently pressed before being transferred to stainless steel vats for skin maceration and alcoholic fermentation. Pumping over is carried out with temperature control. A long post-fermentation maceration is then carried out to favour the extraction of the components of the skin and to ensure a pleasant acidity.

Once the maceration is complete, the wines destined for the Reserva Especial range are transported to Vila Nova de Gaia in Porto. The wines are aged for 12 to 18 months in 225 litre new French oak barrels. The final blend of the Reserva Especial is made from a selection of the best wines based on the tastings carried out during the ageing period. A natural deposit may form in the bottle.

The blend

Touriga Franca (40%)

Touriga Nacional (30%)

Tinta Roriz (30%).

Casa Ferreirinha’s Reserva Especial 2007: Characteristics and tasting tips

The tasting

The colour is deep and opaque.

Intense and deliciously aromatic, the bouquet is very rich. Ripe red fruit, plum, cinnamon and clove spice notes harmoniously blend with notes of tobacco box and undergrowth, while the accuracy of the ageing period is shown by delicate woody notes that are perfectly integrated.

Superbly structured, the palate unfolds a full body with firm tannins while retaining a beautiful acidity and thus forming a perfect balance. Intense and complex, the development in the mouth leads to a very persistent finish.

Food and wine pairing

This exceptional Portuguese wine is a perfect match for meat, game or mature cheeses.

To fully appreciate the complexity of this wine, it is advisable to place the bottle in an upright position at least one night before tasting and to serve it at a temperature of between 16 and 18°C.

This Reserva Especial 2007 by Casa Ferreirinha has a great ageing potential. Enjoy now, this great red wine from Portugal can be kept in the cellar for a few more years, if it is stored in optimal conditions and protected from light.
