Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for Pétrus 2023
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a brilliant garnet hue with a narrow rim, reflecting great elegance.
Nose
Highly sophisticated, the aromatic bouquet exudes floral notes of iris and violet, intertwined with indulgent hints of chocolate, dried raspberries and bright cherries. Subtle touches of truffle, citrus, black pepper and herbs round out this complex palette.
Palate
The palate offers a luxurious, velvety texture, perfectly balanced by remarkable freshness. It unfolds with black fruit aromas such as blackberry, black cherry, plum and blackcurrant, enriched with mineral, spicy and tobacco nuances. The tannins, though present in generous amounts, prove incredibly silky and integrated, offering a refined, chalky texture. The finish, exceptionally persistent, lingers for over a minute.
Food and Wine Pairing
This great wine pairs wonderfully with classic meats such as beef, veal, lamb or duck, ideally roasted or grilled. It also enhances roasted poultry, umami-rich Asian dishes, as well as mushroom- or truffle-based dishes and meaty fish such as seared tuna.
Serving and Cellaring
Pétrus 2023 is a wine built to last, best enjoyed between approximately 2030 and 2065. In its youth, it is recommended to decant it for two to four hours to fully release its aromatic complexity.
Other Characteristics
This vintage has an alcohol content of 14.5% and a pH of 3.65.
The Elegance and Complexity of an Iconic Pomerol Wine
The Estate
Located in the renowned region of Bordeaux, the Pétrus estate traces its origins back to the mid-1750s. This 11.5-hectare vineyard has risen to the pinnacle of the world's wine hierarchy thanks to a philosophy that favors quality over quantity. Today, the estate is led by Jean-François Moueix, principal owner, in partnership with Alejandro Santo Domingo, a minority shareholder since 2018. Under the technical direction of Christian Moueix and winemaker Olivier Berrouet, the estate continues to produce wines of remarkable precision, true to their exceptional terroir.
The Vineyard
Rising to 40 meters in altitude, at the highest point of the Pomerol appellation, the vineyard sits on the famous "boutonnière." This one-of-a-kind terroir is composed of a 40-million-year-old subsoil of smectite-rich blue clay, allowing for exceptional water regulation during dry summers. The vines, averaging 35 to 40 years old, are cultivated using environmentally friendly methods, including regular tilling and green harvesting to concentrate the grapes' aromas.
The Vintage
The year 2023 began with an early spring that encouraged rapid vegetative growth. The summer season was then marked by alternating rain and sunny spells, punctuated by intense heat peaks. These weather conditions required constant vigilance from the vineyard teams to cope with strong mildew pressure, while still allowing the grapes to reach optimal, balanced ripeness.
Vinification and Aging
After meticulous hand-harvesting and a rigorous double sorting, the grapes destined for Pétrus 2023 are destemmed. A brief pre-fermentation maceration precedes fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete vats. Skin maceration lasts 15 to 25 days, followed by malolactic fermentation also carried out in concrete vats to preserve the purity of the fruit. Aging then takes place in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new, for 18 to 28 months, with regular racking every three months.
