Description
A fine balanced Australian wine with chocolate aromas by Penfolds
The estate
Founded in 1844 by Christopher Rawson Penfolds, the Penfolds estate built up a solid reputation from 1900 onwards due to its powerful red wines. The brand was indeed the first to opt for ageing their wines in French oak barrels and to comprise blends from different vineyards and multiple regions. A reference with a worldwide reputation, Penfolds produce legendary Australian wines.
The vineyard
Special Bin 111A comes from the two exceptional vineyards of the Barossa Valley and the Clare Valley in South Australia. The Barossa Valley is home to one of Australia's oldest vineyards that was not impacted by the phylloxera crisis. This most northerly South Australian wine region enjoys a continental climate. Alternating between valleys, plateaus and windswept hillsides, Clare Valley’s contrasting features produce wines with strong personalities.
The vinification and ageing
Following the harvest in mid-March and once fermentation is complete, the 2016 Special 111A Shiraz is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels.
The blend
The Special 111A Shiraz 2016 is a monovarietal blend made exclusively from Shiraz.
The tasting
Colour
Special 111A Shiraz 2016 is a deep red colour.
Nose
The nose is surprisingly precise and clear. Aromas of iodine, capers and dark chocolate develop into fragrances of spice and blueberry on the second nose.
Palate
On the palate, the tannins are velvety. A full and balanced wine, bitter chocolate and dark fruit aromas emerge.
