Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Angles" 2019 from Olivier Leflaive
Tasting
Appearance
The wine shows a beautiful red colour.
Nose
The nose opens with crisp aromas of fresh fruit, giving a lovely sense of purity.
Palate
On the palate, the texture is particularly refined and velvety. The balance is remarkable, supported by a lovely freshness that blends perfectly with the wine's natural richness, lending it great elegance.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with full-flavoured meats such as beef in sauce, stuffed quail or a fillet of lamb served with its reduced juices.
Serving and Cellaring
For optimal enjoyment, we recommend serving this Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Angles" 2019 at a temperature between 17 and 19°C, opening the bottle about one hour before serving. This wine can be enjoyed now, but it also has the structure needed to age in the cellar and be enjoyed until around 2032.
The Elegance and Finesse of a Red Volnay 1er Cru Wine
The Estate
Founded in 1984, Olivier Leflaive has established itself as an essential name in Burgundy, France. Based in Puligny-Montrachet, it relies on an original model combining the roles of négociant-éleveur and estate owner. The estate farms 26 hectares of its own vines and vinifies grapes from around one hundred hectares in total. Today led by Jean Soubeyrand, Chairman of the Management Board, with the active involvement of the family, the estate stands out for its level 3 HVE environmental certification and its pioneering role in regional wine tourism.
The Vineyard
Located in the upper part of the Volnay appellation, the Climat "Clos des Angles" enjoys an ideal south-easterly exposure. The vines, around forty years old on average, thrive at an altitude of between 250 and 300 metres. They grow in shallow brown calcareous soils, predominantly clay-limestone and clay-silt. All of these plots are managed according to the principles of integrated pest management, reflecting a deep respect for the environment.
The Vintage
The year 2019 began with a mild, dry winter, leading to an early vegetative cycle. Spring was marked by frost episodes in mid-April, considerably reducing yields. A cooler June then caused uneven flowering and coulure. The summer proved particularly hot, resulting in water stress. These contrasting climatic conditions gave rise to small, extremely concentrated berries, with high natural sugar levels while retaining excellent acidity thanks to the lack of water.
Winemaking and Ageing
After an entirely hand-picked harvest, the grapes are carefully sorted on arrival at the winery. For this Volnay 1er Cru "Clos des Angles" 2019, 50% of the harvest is destemmed, while the other half is kept as whole bunches. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in open vats with a 21-day maceration. Ageing then continues entirely in oak barrels, 30% of which are new, for 17 months, including a 5-month period of blending as a single batch.
