The Power and Depth of a Corton Grand Cru
The Estate
Although the family's roots in Puligny-Montrachet go back to 1717, the House of Olivier Leflaive was officially founded in 1984 in Burgundy. Established by Olivier, this négoce and bespoke élevage business has gradually acquired its own vineyards. Today, the estate is still co-owned by Olivier and his brother Patrick, while the new generation, embodied by Julie, continues the estate's spirit of hospitality. Harvesting approximately 100 hectares of vines, 26 of which are estate-owned, the house is renowned for its uncompromising quality standards and its respect for terroir.
The Vineyard
Established since the 7th century, the historic terroir of Corton Clos du Roi extends across the commune of Aloxe-Corton. Sheltered by the Bois de Corton, this rectangular, east-facing plot enjoys a south to south-easterly exposure, at an altitude ranging from 270 to 320 metres. The vines, around forty years old on average, flourish on Bathonian limestone soils that are particularly rich in marl and iron-bearing elements. For this cuvée, the vineyard is farmed according to the rigorous principles of certified biodynamics.
The Vintage
Hailed as a dream vintage, 2018 began with a rainy winter that replenished the soil's water reserves. A mild spring then fostered a perfect, abundant flowering. The summer proved particularly hot and dry, with no major climatic incident disrupting the growing cycle. The harvest took place under the best auspices between late August and mid-September, yielding grapes in impeccable health.
Vinification and Ageing
The grapes for this Corton Grand Cru "Clos du Roi" 2018 are entirely hand-harvested and then meticulously sorted upon arrival at the winery. The vinification combines 70% destemmed grapes with 30% whole bunches. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in open vats over 19 days. Finally, the wine is aged for 15 months exclusively in oak barrels, one third of which are new, including a three-month period of blending in bulk.
Grape Variety
Pinot Noir (100%).
