Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

A youthful white, laced with buttery lemon cake, peach, vanilla and citronella aromas and flavors. Supple and harmonious, revealing an undercurrent of seashore/iodine. The superlong finish echoes all the fruit, mineral and baking spice elements. Drink now through 2036. 110 cases made, 20 cases imported.

James Suckling

Complex smoky nose with flint stones, dried mangoes, apple tart and seductive spice box elements. Dried lemons and chamomile. Full-bodied, with so much energy and a solid backbone of both acidity and phenolic tension. Builds and lasts for minutes. Try this after 2024.

Description

A bold and intense Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru wine by Louis Latour

The estate

The largest wine estate in Burgundy, the Domaine Louis Latour boasts a winemaking history of over 200 years. Spread across the finest plots in Premiers and Grands Crus from the Côte de Beaune to the Côte de Nuits, the estate's 50-hectare vineyard produces a range of wines from 130 appellations, each authentically and elegantly expressing the characteristics of their original terroir.

A renowned Burgundian estate, Louis Latour has been actively committed to environmentally conscious and respectful viticulture since 1996.

The vineyard

This 2021 Grand Cru is a Bâtard-Montrachet wine from a vineyard where the vines, averaging 5 years old, grow on clay-limestone soils. Located just below Montrachet, the "Clos Poirier" is a 0.85-hectare plot oriented north-south, with Louis Latour owning 0.43 hectares.

The vintage

The year began with a cool and wet winter followed by a particularly warm spring at the end of March and beginning of April, promoting early bud break. From April 5th to 8th, a cold snap reaching -8°C heavily impacted the vineyard. While weather conditions from June to early August increased sanitary pressure, flowering was uniform. The end of August, milder and drier, ensured optimal ripeness for the berries saved from frost.

Vinification and aging

Traditional fermentation in new oak barrels from the estate's cooperage (100% new). Complete malolactic fermentation followed by 10 to 12 months of aging in new oak barrels.

Grape variety

Chardonnay (100%)
