Robert Parker

The 2019 Ried Steinmassl 1ÖTW Kamptal Riesling is beautifully fine, crystalline and herbal on the elegant, flinty and aromatic nose that gives way to perfectly ripe and dense apricot and peach aromas. Crystalline and refined on the palate, this is a full-bodied, powerful and intense Steinmassl that reflects the coolish terroir as well as the late harvest of fully ripe and concentrated fruit aromas. The wine reveals marked phenolic grip but has enough juice and texture to integrate what is still a bit too present. A very promising, persistently salty and aromatic Riesling. 13% alcohol. Tasted at Schloss Gobelsburg in June 2021.

The expressive candied-citrus and cake-dough aromas lead you into this medium-bodied but concentrated and texturally rich dry riesling with plenty of herbs at the bold and fresh finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

Tasted from a 7.5-cl mini sample bottle. Certified biodynamic by respekt-BIODYN and the wine is certified organic. Matured 19 months in oak. Captivating flint reduction (I’m beginning to think I need a pithy acronym for the 'Loimer funk'), with multiple shades of orange (the fruit, not the style) in the nose. Elegant apple fruitiness and white-flower character. Complex and creamy citrus palate, with well-integrated round acidity and a lingering, preserved-lemon finish. (PS)

The longer maturation pays off. Smoky notes, spicy florals, ripe stone fruit, peach and fresh almonds. Great balance, yellow-fruited, with a piquant herbal spice, arrow-straight and aristocratic, velvety, with juicy richness and a fine tannic grip. Outstanding length.

Description

A fine Autrian white wine, rich and delicate

The estate

Forming one with the owner, Fred Loimer, the Loimer estate has become a reference in the world of wine. Modern and innovative, this winegrower who respects nature by always putting an emphasis on carrying out manual harvesting and following the requirements of biodynamic viticulture to a tee. Instilling a low interventionist policy in the cellar, he uses only the quality of his grapes to produce fine Austrian wines with a unique character. The wines from the Loimer estate reflect the uniqueness of the complex Kamptal terroir as well as the passion and patience of a skilful and talented winemaker.

The vineyard

This Riesling Langenlois Steinmassl 2019 from the Kamptal DAC appellation (equivalent to the AOP appellation level) stems from the Langenlois Steinmassl vineyard. This plot is situated between 300 and 340 metres above sea level and is characterised as one of the region's typical terroirs. Enjoying a continental climate that is both hot during the day and cold at night, the soil is predominantly composed of quartz. The vines are between 15 and 55 years old and benefit from the estate's organic and biodynamic viticultural practices.

The wine

The estate's very plain label portrays an intriguing little logo. It is in fact a Polynesian symbol that refers to fertility, a subtle reference to biodynamics and the idea that Nature is a living being.

Vinification and ageing

A rigorous sorting of the grapes is carried out during the harvest in order to keep only those that showcase a high-quality. Fermentation is carried out 50% in oak barrels and 50% in stainless steel tanks for 4 to 6 weeks at an ambient temperature of around 22 degrees. The wine is aged on its lees for 19 months in oak barrels.

The blend

This 2019 Loimer Riesling Langenlois Steinmassl is a 100% Riesling.
