Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Baudes" 2021 by Joseph Drouhin
Tasting
Colour
This wine displays a bright, luminous red colour, a sign of fine extraction and well-preserved substance.
Nose
The nose is complex and pure, revealing notes of violet and black cherry, accompanied by touches of humus, truffle and, as it approaches maturity, game.
Palate
The palate is seductive, with rather restrained and delicate tannins, in a fine balance between texture and acidity. The finish lingers on notes of candied fruit and kirsch.
Food and Wine Pairing
This Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Baudes" 2021 is an ideal match for poultry such as duck and goose, as well as game birds. It also finds a fine echo in refined preparations with mushrooms or truffle, or in dishes from classic Burgundian and French cuisine featuring delicate sauces.
Serving and Cellaring
We recommend serving this Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Baudes" 2021 at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. Its ageing potential is estimated at 10 to 20 years, and up to 25 years under the best conditions.
A Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru of Great Finesse from Joseph Drouhin
The Estate
Founded in Beaune in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin, the Maison Joseph Drouhin is now run by the fourth generation, represented by Philippe, Véronique, Laurent and Frédéric Drouhin. A renowned négociant-propriétaire in Burgundy, the estate now covers nearly 100 hectares spread over more than 60 appellations, including 14 grands crus and 20 premiers crus. The house has distinguished itself through an early conversion to organic and then biodynamic farming from the late 1980s, in a constant pursuit of elegance and respect for terroir.
The Vineyard
Coming from the Les Baudes climat in Chambolle-Musigny, this premier cru lies just below the grand cru Bonnes-Mares, on a gentle east-facing slope. The Jurassic limestone subsoil is particularly well suited to Pinot Noir. The house owns just 0.33 hectare here, planted with vines averaging around 32 years of age, farmed according to the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture.
The Vintage
The 2021 vintage in Burgundy was marked by severe climatic challenges, resulting in historically low yields. These conditions gave rise to red wines of moderate alcohol, with freshness and a distinctly Burgundian character, in which the expression of fruit and tension take precedence over power.
Vinification and Ageing
The grapes for this Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Baudes" 2021 are entirely hand-harvested into small open crates. Vinification takes place in open vats with indigenous yeasts, including a proportion of whole clusters of 20 to 50% depending on the vintage, for a 2 to 3-week maceration punctuated by punching down and pumping over. After pressing in a vertical press, the wine is aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels, of which around 25% are new, made from trees selected while standing and air-dried for three years.
Grape Variety
100% Pinot Noir.
