Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Marlène N°3 2013 from Peyre Rose

Tasting

Colour

The wine shows a deep garnet-red colour, enhanced by subtle purple highlights that reflect the natural concentration of the grapes.

Nose

The nose reveals remarkable aromatic complexity. Red and black fruit notes come first, evoking black cherry, blackberry and ripe plum. These fruity aromas gradually gain nuances of Mediterranean garrigue, with touches of rosemary, thyme and sage. Spicy notes of black pepper are accompanied by subtle hints of vanilla, cocoa and cold tobacco. Minerality also emerges through nuances of gunflint and graphite, reflecting the limestone character of the terroir.

Palate

The attack is soft and elegant, unfolding a silky, caressing texture on the palate. The tannic structure, well present, integrates harmoniously, without roughness or austerity. The wine expresses lovely density while retaining a certain lightness and a relative freshness. Balanced acidity contributes to the overall vivacity and to the persistence on the palate. The finish remains remarkably long, gradually revealing spicy flavours, notes of garrigue, cold tobacco and dried aromatic herbs. The balance between tannic structure and aromatic expression gives the wine a sophistication characteristic of great cuvées that have benefited from extended ageing.

Food and Wine Pairing

This wine pairs ideally with grilled or roasted red meats, notably a rib of beef or a roast leg of lamb with Mediterranean herbs. It also goes perfectly with meat stews and braised dishes, and with game birds such as roast duck, partridge or quail. Mediterranean dishes featuring aromatic herbs, cooked tomatoes and olive oil also make excellent accompaniments.

Serving and Cellaring

The Marlène N°3 2013 can be enjoyed now and should keep until around 2036, or even well beyond. For optimal storage, keep the wine at a constant temperature between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, away from light, lying horizontally.

An Exceptional Vin de France from a Unique Terroir

The Estate

Founded in 1988 by Marlène Soria, Domaine Peyre Rose now extends over 24 hectares. A former real estate professional, Marlène Soria began planting vines on her property in 1980 for her own consumption before creating one of the most prestigious estates in the region. Named "Man of the Year" by the Revue du Vin de France in 1994 and praised by Robert Parker, she still runs the estate personally, with a philosophy based on patience, authenticity and respect for the terroir. The estate has practised organic farming since its creation and stands out for the exceptionally long ageing of its wines, often ten years or more before release.

The Vineyard

This Vin de France comes from vines grown on the Peyrals plateau, at an altitude of around 220 metres, on clay-limestone soils. The vineyard benefits from a Mediterranean climate with continental influences, characterised by intense sunshine and regular winds. Surrounded by a natural wall of garrigue that completely isolates the estate, the vineyard is farmed under certified organic practices. Deliberately very low yields, rarely exceeding twenty hectolitres per hectare, ensure maximum concentration in the juice. Selective hand harvesting makes it possible to pick only grapes that have reached optimal ripeness.

The Vintage

The 2013 vintage was characterised by a cool, wet spring, with a particularly cold May that delayed vegetative development by around two weeks. Abundant spring rains ensured sufficient water reserves for the entire season. The June flowering, marked by damp conditions, affected yields, particularly for Grenache Noir. A remarkable Indian summer in September and early October, with warm days, cool nights and dry northerly winds, allowed optimal final ripening of the grapes. The vintage ultimately produced wines marked by lovely freshness, supple tannins and overall elegance rather than raw power.

Winemaking and Ageing

The Marlène N°3 2013 benefited from an exceptionally long ageing period, characteristic of the estate's philosophy. Vinification takes place in concrete tanks, without recourse to artificial air conditioning. The wine was aged for many years before release, allowing all its components to integrate harmoniously and its tannins to soften gradually. This unique approach enables the estate to release wines that have already reached optimal maturity, ready to be enjoyed immediately while retaining considerable ageing potential.
