Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2022 Moulin-à-Vent Vignes du Tremblay offers slightly darker fruit on the nose than the Empreinte cuvée; it's a little more cohesive and complex. The palate is, again, sweet on the entry with candied orange peel mixed with kirsch and cranberry. Smooth in texture, there is decent length here, though it doesn't quite match the level of the most engaging wines of the appellation.

La RVF

Vigne du Tremblay remains a cuvée that every lover of great Beaujolais should have in their cellar. It expresses the quintessence of Gamay, with well-defined fruit and tannins worthy of the great Moulin-à-Vent, while handling vintages like 2022 perfectly.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Domaine Paul Janin "Vignes du Tremblay" 2022

Tasting notes

Colour
This French red wine reveals a deep, luminous ruby hue, with subtle violet nuances at the rim of the glass.

Nose
Displaying great finesse, the aromatic bouquet opens with clean notes of ripe red berries such as raspberry, redcurrant and morello cherry. It then develops delicate floral touches reminiscent of peony and violet, underscored by spicy nuances of white pepper and sweet licorice.

Palate
The attack is smooth and elegant, carried by a fine acidity that gives structure to the whole. The mid-palate reveals a seductive velvety texture, supported by silky yet well-present tannins. The finish, long and refined, unfolds on a characteristic mineral signature, leaving a pleasant lingering impression of black cherry and dried violet.

Food and wine pairing

The balanced profile of this wine pairs wonderfully with delicate white meats such as herb-roasted guinea fowl, veal or lean duck. It also shines alongside a fine charcuterie board, tender red meats such as sirloin steak, or slow-cooked dishes like rabbit stew. As for cheese, it enhances soft-ripened varieties such as Brie de Meaux or Reblochon.

Service and storage

With fine ageing potential, Domaine Paul Janin "Vignes du Tremblay" 2022 offers immediate enjoyment but will continue to gain complexity, drinking well until around 2037.

Other characteristics

This cuvée stands out for its deliberately limited yields, ranging between 26 and 30 hectoliters per hectare, favoring optimal concentration of aromas and structure.

The authentic expression of Moulin-à-Vent's granitic terroir

The estate

Founded in 1918, Domaine Paul Janin is located in Romanèche-Thorins, at the heart of Beaujolais. This historic family estate is now run by Éric Janin, representing the fifth generation, who has worked alongside his daughter Perrine since 2023. The estate stands out for its artisanal values, favoring hand craftsmanship and the preservation of its old-vine heritage. Widely recognized and praised by prestigious guides, it is committed to sustainable viticulture and holds organic certification.

The vineyard

The vines flourish within the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, at altitudes ranging from 200 to 500 meters, benefiting from a favorable east-southeast exposure. The terroir is characterized by sometimes very steep slopes and an exceptional geology composed of heavily weathered granite, sand, ancient alluvial deposits and a unique presence of manganese. The soil is maintained through shallow plowing without any herbicides, and the vines, often trained in the traditional low goblet style, are renewed through massale selection to preserve biodiversity.

The vintage

The year 2022 was marked by a particularly hot and dry summer. These weather conditions promoted accelerated grape ripening, leading to a faster growing cycle and an early harvest starting at the end of August.

Winemaking and aging

For Domaine Paul Janin "Vignes du Tremblay" 2022, the grapes are hand-harvested in small crates and then meticulously sorted on a vibrating table. The winemaking process favors whole-bunch maceration at 80%, lasting 12 to 15 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Aging then continues in these same stainless steel vats, on fine lees, for a period of 16 months before bottling.
