Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Carignan "1903" 2023 Domaine Le Roc Des Anges

Tasting

Colour
This red wine from France reveals a dark hue enhanced by strikingly pronounced violet highlights.

Nose
With great complexity, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of black fruits such as cherry and blackberry. It then evolves towards touches of leather, truffle and a characteristic minerality.

Palate
The palate offers beautiful depth and remarkable complexity, while retaining a great freshness that brings liveliness. The structure is built on tannins with a particularly silky texture.

Food and wine pairing

This cuvée pairs wonderfully with feathered game such as woodcock, or with roasted or stewed venison. It also perfectly accompanies rich poultry dishes such as duck confit, a herb-roasted pork shoulder, as well as platters of fine cured meats or minerally-driven cheeses.

Service and storage

With remarkable ageing potential, this Carignan "1903" 2023 is a wine for laying down, which can evolve in the cellar and be enjoyed until around 2043.

The pure expression of a schist terroir in Roussillon by Domaine Le Roc Des Anges

The estate

Founded in 2001 by Marjorie Gallet, who was joined by Stéphane in 2008, Domaine Le Roc Des Anges is located in Montner, in the Roussillon. This French estate quickly established itself thanks to its philosophy centred on biodynamics and the pure expression of terroir. The property's name is inspired by a vein of white quartz running through the black schist. After more than twenty years of establishing the estate as one of the region's benchmarks, the founders sold the majority stake to Thibault Ponthier, the current owner since late 2023, ensuring the continuity of this roughly fifty-hectare vineyard.

The vineyard

Located on north-facing slopes of the Força Real mountain, this terroir within the IGP Côtes Catalanes benefits from a cool, windy microclimate. The vines, averaging 65 to 70 years old with some century-old plots, root deeply into shallow soils composed of highly weathered, sandy-textured schist. Grown using organic and biodynamic farming methods, this high-altitude vineyard produces naturally low yields, favouring optimal concentration in the grapes.

Winemaking and ageing

The making of the Carignan "1903" 2023 relies on a minimalist approach. After partial destemming, fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts in closed concrete tanks, with no temperature control, punching down or pumping over. The wine is then pressed and returned to tank to complete its fermentation. Ageing takes place exclusively in tank, with no exposure to wood, in order to preserve the brightness of the fruit. The wine is finally bottled without fining and with only very light filtration.
