Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Pommard 1er Cru "Clos des Epenots" 2025 from Domaine du Château de Meursault
Food and Wine Pairing
This Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epenots pairs naturally with roasted or grilled red meats, such as beef or lamb, as well as with feathered or furred game served with rich sauces. Dishes based on mushrooms, red wine reductions or root vegetables also echo the aromatic complexity expected from this style of Pommard Premier Cru.
A structured Pommard 1er Cru from a historic monopole of Château de Meursault
The estate
Domaine du Château de Meursault, in Burgundy, took on its modern winemaking configuration in 1973, when André Boisseaux restored the château and expanded the vineyard across the Côte de Beaune. Since December 2012, the estate has been owned by the Halley family, with Olivier Halley as proprietor. The domaine now extends over 67 hectares, all farmed organically, spread across around a hundred plots among grands crus, premiers crus and village appellations.
The vineyard
The Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epenots comes from a walled clos of 3.63 hectares, held as a monopole by the domaine and located in the northern part of Pommard, on the border with the Beaune area. The soils are dominated by well-drained limestone, conducive to the steady ripening of Pinot Noir. Like the rest of the domaine's vineyard, this plot in the Pommard 1er Cru appellation has been farmed under certified organic agriculture since the 2022 vintage.
The vintage
The 2025 vintage in Burgundy began with a two-stage flowering, which started in late May under summery temperatures and was then slowed by cooler weather, causing coulure and millerandage and reducing the crop potential. After a return to seasonal temperatures in early July, véraison was completed between 5 and 8 August depending on the sector, with the grapes in perfect sanitary condition. The domaine's harvest took place between 22 August and 4 September, preceded by close analytical monitoring of ripeness across all plots.
Winemaking and ageing
The Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epenots 2025 comes from a harvest sorted first by hand and then optically, so that only the healthiest grapes are retained. After a cold pre-fermentation maceration of around five days, alcoholic fermentation is carried out gently, favouring pump-overs over punch-downs, over a maceration period of 16 to 20 days. The wine is then transferred to oak barrels, where it is aged on its lees.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
