A Languedoc red wine combining Bordeaux tradition and Mediterranean character
The estate
Acquired in 1998 by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild and her sons, Domaine de Lambert, renamed Domaine de Baronarques, spans 40 hectares in Languedoc, in Saint-Polycarpe. Now owned by Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, this estate benefits from an exceptional terroir at 250 to 350 meters of elevation on clay-limestone soils. Its distinctive character lies in the combination of Atlantic and Mediterranean climatic influences, enabling the expression of both Bordeaux and Languedoc grape varieties, supported by the Rothschild family’s legendary know-how.
The vineyard
This Grand Vin Rouge from Domaine de Baronarques comes from a 40-hectare vineyard on clay-limestone soils and benefits from an elevation of 250 to 350 meters. The vines, averaging 24 years of age, enjoy a unique climate where Atlantic and Mediterranean influences converge. This location in the IGP Hautes Vallée de l'Aude allows for optimal varietal expression in an unspoiled environment.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage in Languedoc was marked by a mild, dry winter that triggered early budbreak as early as April 5 for the red varieties. Flowering took place between late May and early June, followed by heavy rainfall in May and June amid very high temperatures. July and early August brought welcome coolness and allowed for late, extended berry ripening. The intense heatwaves in mid-August, with temperatures above 43 °C, did not lead to significant water stress thanks to good water reserves in the soils. In September, the heat persisted and, combined with rainfall deficits, increased berry concentration. Harvest took place from September 12 to October 4 under perfect sanitary conditions.
Winemaking and aging
The Grand Vin Rouge 2023 is aged for 12 months in barrels, 25% new. This gentle approach preserves the fruit’s expression while providing an elegant tannic structure and subtle oak notes that integrate harmoniously into the overall profile.
Grape varieties
Merlot (36%), Cabernet Franc (26%), Syrah (25%), Malbec (10%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (3%).
