An elegant, balanced Barsac
The estate
Founded in the mid-17th century by André Duranceau, Château Nairac is located in Barsac, in the heart of the Bordeaux vineyard. A Barsac Second Growth in the 1855 official classification, it benefits from a microclimate linked to the proximity of the Garonne and its meeting point with the Ciron, ideal for botrytis cinerea. The estate covers 17 ha (including 8 in production), dominated by Sémillon. Since 2022, the owner-operator has been SCEA Terres Bordelaises (the Helfrich family), committed to a transition to organic farming.
The vineyard
The Château Nairac vineyard extends over 17 hectares in the commune of Barsac, less than two kilometers from the Garonne. This proximity to the river and the confluence with the Ciron create ideal conditions for the development of botrytis cinerea, the noble fungus essential to producing great sweet wines. The vines, averaging over forty years of age, are rooted in sandy-clay gravel soils that are particularly favorable to the expression of Sémillon, the dominant grape variety of the Barsac appellation.
The vintage
The 2008 vintage in Bordeaux, and particularly in the Sauternes area and in Barsac, proved especially challenging. A devastating frost in early April destroyed more than half of the buds at Château Nairac, drastically reducing yields to around 6.5 hectoliters per hectare. Despite an unsettled spring marked by downy mildew and hail, a welcome Indian summer arrived at the end of September, bringing generous sunshine and humid conditions conducive to the development of noble rot. Harvesting continued through November in sunny weather, allowing for a rigorous selection of the grapes. This 2008 vintage is defined by its freshness and remarkable balance.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for Château Nairac 2008 are hand-harvested in several successive passes, ensuring that only perfectly botrytised berries are picked. After pressing in small crates, the musts are transferred to barrels for alcoholic fermentation. Sémillon ferments in new barrels, while Sauvignon Blanc is vinified in once-filled barrels. Each parcel is vinified separately. Aging takes place on full lees in barrels for around 18 months. The final blend is carried out after racking, before a return to barrels to perfect the wine’s harmonization.
