Decanter

Red fruit but also vegetal, slightly stemmy aromatics lead into a palate that feels a touch rough around the edges, with raw tannins making their presence known. The wine nonetheless performs better than expected, perhaps the clay soils lend a moderating hand in the vintage’s dry heat. There’s enough underlying fruit to carry it, even if the structure remains a bit rugged for now.

Flowers and currants are on display in the perfume. The medium-bodied palate is soft, round, fruity, and creamy, allowing you to enjoy this on release and for 10–12 years after that with pleasure. Drink from 2028–2038. 89–91 Pts

Powerful rich purple colour, high cloves, spiced cocoa bean and smoked earth, this has high extraction, walks the line but stays on the right side of bitter. Chalky tannins as it opens, allowing the fruit to appear. 30% new oak. Harvest 8 to 22 September.

Marked by oak aging, the bouquet of Maucaillou 2025 also reveals hints of red berries. Velvety on the attack, it follows a linear progression. Its perfectly integrated tannins provide the backbone, together with the acidic structure. A fresh, juicy wine to enjoy in its youth.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Château Maucaillou 2025

Tasting

Appearance
In its youth, the wine reveals a deep ruby hue with violet highlights, which will evolve majestically towards garnet and tawny shades over the years.

Nose
The aromatic expression is both subtle and highly concentrated. It releases intense scents of black fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry. This fruity ensemble is enriched with notes of toasted almond, liquorice, spices and a delicately toasted oak.

Palate
The attack is round and smooth, introducing a wonderfully ample body. The structure is built on sophisticated, elegant tannins that support a concentrated, fresh mid-palate. The finish stretches out at length on mineral touches and echoes of black fruits.

Food and wine pairings
This characterful wine sublimely enhances grilled or roasted red meats such as beef, lamb or venison. It also pairs wonderfully with noble poultry and duck, particularly when served with rich sauces, mushrooms or aromatic herbs. For added variety, it goes perfectly with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, or with spicy vegetarian dishes such as a tagine flavoured with cinnamon and coriander.

Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate Château Maucaillou 2025, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 17 and 18 °C. If you wish to enjoy it in its youth, decanting will allow for optimal aeration. Endowed with remarkable ageing potential, this vintage can be kept in the cellar and should be drunk until around 2037.

The elegance and concentration of a great Moulis wine at Château Maucaillou

The estate
Founded in 1875, Château Maucaillou oversees a vast 90-hectare vineyard on the left bank of Bordeaux. This historic family-owned property has been held by the Dourthe family since 1929.

The vineyard
The estate's lands extend over 90 hectares, including 70 hectares in the Moulis appellation. The vines flourish on a soil of Quaternary alluvial deposits, mainly composed of Günz gravels from the Garonne. This exceptional terroir plays a crucial thermal role: the gravels store solar heat to release it back to the vines, thereby promoting optimal ripening of the berries.

The vintage
This 150th harvest in the estate's history was marked by particular climatic conditions that significantly advanced the vegetative cycle, making it one of the earliest harvests ever recorded. Although yields were lower due to natural factors and rigorous selection, the harvested berries displayed exceptional concentration and perfect balance.

Winemaking and aging
Vinification in temperature-controlled vats. Ageing for 14 months continues in French oak barrels (30% new, 70% one and two wines old).

Grape varieties
64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot
