Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Château Léoville Poyferré 2017
Tasting
Colour
The wine reveals a deep hue with intense purple-black and garnet highlights.
Nose
Remarkably complex, the nose exudes generous aromas of ripe black fruit such as blackcurrant, blackberry and plum. It then opens onto delicate floral notes of violet and rose, subtly underscored by hints of cedar, cigar box, sweet spices and graphite.
Palate
On the palate, the wine offers a dense texture and a creamy mid-palate, perfectly balanced by lovely freshness. The exceptionally fine, particularly silky tannins give structure to a fruit-rich core that stretches into a long, mineral and refreshing finish.
Food and Wine Pairings
This red wine pairs beautifully with roast or grilled meats, such as a herb-crusted rack of lamb or a rib of beef. It will also enhance game dishes and braised beef cheek, as well as aged hard cheeses such as a mature Comté or Parmesan.
Serving and Ageing
To fully appreciate this 2017 vintage, it is best served at around 15.5°C after decanting for one to two hours. With excellent ageing potential, this wine can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2047.
The Fruity Richness and Sensuality of an Iconic Saint-Julien Wine
The Estate
Although its winemaking origins date back to the seventeenth century, Château Léoville Poyferré officially came into being in 1840 following the division of a vast estate. Ranked as a Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, this jewel of Bordeaux has been owned by the Cuvelier family since 1920. Now run by Sara Lecompte Cuvelier, the estate covers 80 hectares. It stands out for its strong commitment to sustainable viticulture and wine tourism, producing wines that combine power and elegance, true to the reputation of their prestigious appellation.
The Vineyard
Located in the heart of the Saint-Julien appellation, the vineyard lies on terraces of Mindel gravel over a sandy-clay subsoil. The vines, averaging around forty years of age, are farmed with respect for the environment. The estate favours sustainable practices, using no herbicides or synthetic pesticides, and incorporates biological pest control methods and a partially biodynamic approach to preserve soil vitality and biodiversity.
The Vintage
2017 was marked by contrasting weather conditions, notably a severe spring frost in the region. However, the estate's sector was spared, enjoying mild weather that allowed the grapes to ripen satisfactorily. Despite some late-season rain, the growing cycle ended favourably, with the harvest taking place between late September and early October.
Vinification and Ageing
Following hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo rigorous sorting, including optical sorting. Vinification is carried out plot by plot. It begins with a cold pre-fermentation maceration to gently extract the aromas. The wine is then aged for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, around 80% of which are new.
Grape Varieties
This blend is made up of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
