Wine Spectator

Absolutely fantastic. This is one of the most exciting young reds I have tasted in a long, long time. It shows intense aromas of berries, currants and minerals, with hints of mint. Full-bodied and packed with fruit and tannins, its long finish is refined and silky. A benchmark for the vintage. Las Cases has always wanted to make first-growth quality in a top-notch vintage, and it certainly did in 2000. Best after 2012. 15,000 cases made.

Decanter

Now closing in on two decades, this is starting to soften and open, bringing exotic spices to the fore. The inky colour translates into tight black fruits with liquorice, cigar box, graphite and grilled gunsmoke. It’s still a little fierce in its tannic structure, and will need a few more years to be truly welcoming, but it’s clear that the grapes reached full phenolic ripeness. The invariably low pH at Leoville, often below 3.5 (as it is here), explains its iron grip. I last tasted this in October 2017 and it has barely budged an inch since then, but it gets significantly better after an hour in the glass (and being double decanted), giving you an idea of just how much life remains ahead. Harvest 28 September to 11 October.

A classic Las Cases with masses of mineral, floral and blueberry character. Full and chewy, with so much power. It’s just opening now.

The 2000 Léoville Las Cases is a vintage that I have encountered a dozen or so times. Jean-Hubert Délon oversaw a magnificent wine in this year. The nose of graphite-infused black fruit is still vivacious and very complex, very Pauillac-like, and supremely well focused. Hints of licorice develop with aeration. The medium-bodied palate features sappy black fruit and perfectly judged acidity. Complex and delineated, with marine-tinged mulberry and black currant notes given a deft Oriental touch on the finish. Bottles are only just beginning to drink perfectly now and will last another 30 or more years.

Concentrated, deep, full-bodied, regal, and complex, the wine retains its youthful edge, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Slowly but surely, the tannins are beginning to subside, and you also find more secondary nuances of tobacco leaf, tar, smoke, wet forest, and spice. The finish is long and expansive. 1 hour in the decanter adds a lot to the wine. Drink from 2025-2065.

Strong ruby, purple reflections, broad rim brightening. Juicy, fruity-sweet and inviting, ripe plum fruit, fine tar, a hint of nougat. Full-bodied, complex, pleasant extract sweetness, silky tannins, wonderful balance and freshness, already accessible, mineral finish, great class.

The 2000 Leoville Las Cases is another brilliant wine and, like most 2000s, appears to just now be at the early stages of its drink window. Smoky black fruits, crushed rocks, lead pencil, and menthol notes all emerge from this brilliant, blockbuster beauty that still tastes like it's just 5-6 years old. Beautifully concentrated, ripe, sexy, and seamless, it has the classic elegance and regal quality of this domaine front and center. It has another 3-4 decades of longevity.

Everything we love in a great Saint-Julien: the finesse and subtlety of the aromas, texture, and tannins, with greater vinosity than all the others.

La RVF

An opulent wine of great expression. On the attack, its richness brings a superb tannic presence to the palate. The fruit expression is enhanced on the finish with complex menthol notes. Smooth throughout, with no rough edges, it stands out for its pedigree and length.

Description

Tasting notes and advice for Château Léoville Las Cases 2000

Tasting

Color

The color displays a magnificent deep ruby-red hue, nearly opaque, with garnet highlights at the rim that reflect the wine’s evolution.

Nose

The nose is explosive and complex, unveiling intense aromas of blackcurrant and black cherry, lifted by mineral graphite notes. With aeration, the bouquet broadens with nuances of cedar, smoke, tobacco leaf and pencil lead. Floral touches of violet and dried rose gradually emerge, while hints of licorice and dark chocolate add depth to the aromatic profile.

Palate

The attack is powerful and fresh, driven by fine, silky tannins perfectly integrated into a smooth, balanced texture. The palate reveals an elegant medium-to-full-bodied structure, with concentrated flavors of dark fruit (blueberry, black raspberry), crushed stone, purple flowers and vanilla. Perfectly calibrated acidity brings energy and freshness, while the finish lingers at length with notes of tobacco, fresh earth and exotic spices.

Food and wine pairings

This Château Léoville Las Cases 2000 pairs beautifully with fine red meats such as beef tenderloin with roasted beets, a grilled rib steak, or herb-crusted pink lamb rack. It also elevates game preparations and roasted poultry with mushrooms. More surprisingly, this wine shows excellent affinity with certain carefully crafted Asian dishes and aged hard cheeses.

Serving and aging

Château Léoville Las Cases 2000 benefits from generous decanting, ideally between two and four hours before serving, to allow the tannins to soften and the aromas to fully unfold. Serve at a temperature of 16-18°C. This vintage can be enjoyed through around 2050, or even beyond.

A rich, beautifully balanced Saint-Julien Second Growth (Grand Cru Classé)

The estate

Created between 1826 and 1840 during the division of the Léoville estate, Château Léoville Las Cases is a Bordeaux Second Growth (Grand Cru Classé) in the 1855 classification, located in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle in the Médoc. The vineyard spans 98 hectares, including the famed 50-hectare Grand Clos enclosed by walls. Managed by Domaines Delon, the estate is now owned by Jean-Hubert Delon. Its style is built on a high proportion of cabernet sauvignon, complemented by cabernet franc and merlot, producing wines with outstanding aging potential.

The vineyard

The Château Léoville Las Cases vineyard enjoys an exceptional geographic position at the northern end of the Saint-Julien appellation, separated from Pauillac and Château Latour by a simple stream, the Juillac. The Grand Vin comes exclusively from the Clos Léoville Las Cases, a walled plot of around 60 hectares. The vines are rooted in deep gravel soils that can reach 10 meters in depth, providing optimal drainage. This proximity to Pauillac lends the wine a distinctive power while preserving the finesse and balance typical of Saint-Julien.

The vintage

The 2000 vintage stood out for its remarkable weather conditions. Mild early-season weather encouraged unusually early growth. After significant rainfall in April and cooler conditions until mid-June, the summer proved hot and dry through harvest. The August and September drought intensified berry concentration and led to an exceptional thickening of grape skins, particularly in cabernet sauvignon, contributing to the structure and extraordinary aging potential of this vintage.

Winemaking and aging

Château Léoville Las Cases 2000 was crafted with a distinctive approach, with fermentations carried out at deliberately lower-than-average temperatures to preserve aromatic richness. Aging took place for 18 to 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels, allowing harmonious integration of oak notes with the fruit and minerality of the wine. This final harvest overseen by Michel Delon before his death in 2000 represents the culmination of his perfectionist work.
