Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

This has alluring waves of frankly ripe plum, blackberry and açaí fruit flavors that caress as they move along, pulling flickers of anise, smoldering incense and Christmas pudding along. Showy and hedonistic, but this has structure and definition as it drapes itself on the finish. A lovely wine. Best from 2022 through 2035. 1,417 cases made.

Exotic aromas of blackberries, truffle, earth and cedar lead to a full body, rich, layered tannins and a long, long finish. So much going on here. Exotic. Give it at least three or four years of bottle age. Exuberant. Try from 2023.

The 2016 Le Gay is terrific. Rich, explosive and vertical in feel, the 2016 is a wine of pedigree and real class. Inky blue and purplish fruit, licorice, lavender all race across the palate. From bottle, Le Gay is more a wine of subtlety and vibrancy than pure power. As good as it is, my impression today is that the fruit is a bit dried out. I liked the 2016 more from barrel.

Earthy, spicy, fresh and juicy, with layers of ripe, fleshy cherries, espresso, and truffle. The wine is concentrated, complex and fresh; you can feel the fleshiness and freshness as well as the silkiness in the tannins, but it is starting to tighten up. So you should definitely hold your bottles for at least 7–8 years, allowing the wine to develop before everything really comes together. The wine was made from a blend of 90% old-vine Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Perfumed and sinful nose with black truffle, meaty dark fruit, violet, fine spices. Seductive. Dense and silky with grainy tannin, bold and voluminous with a very sustained finish.

90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 40-year-old vines, 27 hl/ha, 14% abv, production around 18,000 bottles. Purple garnet with a dense core and lightening rim. Airy, ripe blackberries on the nose, followed by red plums, a hint of mocha and cooled forest fruit tea. On the dense palate, wild cherry and chocolate pastilles, finishing long on blueberry jelly and plum skin.

Kunz barrel sample 17: (90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 27 hl/ha, 14% alc./vol.) Concentrated, velvety, fresh bouquet of blackberries, black cherries, honey, mint, tea leaves. Densely interwoven, multi-layered palate with powerful, sweet fruit, plenty of fine tannins, a finely creamy, well-muscled structure, diverse, intense aromatics, and a very long, aromatic finish.

You can feel the foundation on the finish, the subtlety of the tannin and its very deep silkiness; let’s wait a few months for the aromatics to assert themselves.

La RVF

Le Gay 2016 has a beautifully crafted structure, with firm tannins still present on the finish. It is a wine that gained in richness and breadth during ageing, developing a richly spicy profile.

Dense garnet red. Such finesse and complexity. Le Gay 2016 shows a remarkable ability to combine freshness and warmth through notes of black berries, licorice wood, as well as eucalyptus and lavender. Finally, pleasant cocoa notes emerge. On the palate, the wine mirrors the nose. It first reveals its gourmand and round side, yet it brings balance and complexity into play. The tannins appear late and are of rare precision. They manage to assert themselves without fuss and to ally with the most important partner: the acidic structure. The result is a beautiful harmony that highlights fruit, power, and freshness. A superb achievement.

Dark, intense and beautiful color. Moderately aromatic nose with ripe, creamy fruit. Smooth on the attack, spicy and fruity mid-palate, the wine unfolds with a creamy touch toward a long, slightly firm finish.

Decanter

Touches of heat are evident on the attack, but the palate is quickly deepened by lashings of black fruits. There's plenty to like here and the texture is gorgeously silky, but just be aware it has broad and fairly inflexible shoulders.

Description

Tasting Characteristics and Tips for Château Le Gay 2016

Tasting

Color

The wine displays a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, revealing fine concentration.

Nose

The nose stands out for its remarkable intensity and complexity. It reveals aromas of Black Forest, fresh blackcurrant, and lilac, alongside nuances of yeast extract, wood smoke, iron ore, and dark chocolate. Notes of black cherry, raspberry, and black truffle enrich the aromatic palette, while hints of vanilla, coconut, and licorice add an extra dimension.

Palate

The palate is medium- to full-bodied, with a velvety, flavorful texture. Generous dark and red fruit shows with intensity, supported by superfine, perfectly ripe tannins. The balance is outstanding, with 14.5% alcohol bringing warmth without heaviness. The very long, seductive finish lingers elegantly with fragrant notes.

Food and wine pairings

This Pomerol is an ideal match for grilled or roasted red meats, especially beef and ribeye. It also pairs perfectly with game such as venison, duck with fruit, as well as roast lamb. Mushroom-based dishes, particularly those featuring truffle, create harmonious pairings with this wine. Aged hard cheeses are also an excellent choice.

Serving and cellaring

Château Le Gay 2016 benefits from being decanted two to three hours before serving to allow the aromas to fully unfold. The ideal serving temperature is 15.5°C. This wine can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve favorably until around 2056, with an optimal drinking window beginning around 2026.

Other characteristics

This vintage earned prestigious scores from international critics: 98 points from James Suckling, 95+ points from Lisa Perrotti-Brown for The Wine Advocate, and 94 points from James Molesworth for Wine Spectator. Production totals around 20,000 bottles.

A powerful, refined Pomerol from the Bordeaux plateau

The estate

Established in the 18th century on the prestigious Pomerol plateau in Bordeaux, Château Le Gay spans 12 hectares of clay-gravel soils, in the immediate vicinity of Petrus and Lafleur. Owned by the Parent family since 2013, the estate is run by Henri Parent, with Florian Pesquier as winemaker and consultants Michel Rolland and Mikaël Laizet. The vineyard, planted to 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, stands out for parcel-by-parcel vinification entirely in barrel and aging in new barrels.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Le Gay occupies a prime location on the Pomerol plateau, benefiting from clay-gravel soils that are particularly well suited to expressing Merlot. The vines boast a remarkable average age of around 50 years, with some having survived the devastating 1956 frost. Vineyard management favors sustainable practices, with hand harvesting, two-pass leaf thinning, and green harvesting on young vines.

The vintage

The 2016 vintage proved exceptional in Pomerol, offering near-ideal climatic conditions. The season benefited from a remarkable balance between warm days and cool nights, allowing for slow, complete ripening of the grapes. Harvest took place between September 27 and October 14, with controlled yields of 27 hectoliters per hectare. These conditions produced grapes of exceptional ripeness and aromatic intensity.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for Château Le Gay 2016 were hand-harvested in small crates, then sorted twice on a sorting table before destemming. An additional berry-by-berry selection was carried out before vinification. A cold soak preceded fermentation, carried out with indigenous yeasts. Vinification was conducted in micro-plots, directly in new French oak barrels. The wine then rested for three months on fine lees after malolactic fermentation, followed by 18 months of aging in 100% new barrels.
