Decanter

Really quite ripe notes on the nose, good aromatics, quite plummy. Nice weight on the palate, supple, good energy and acidity, a little lean and straight but enjoyable acidity gives lift and there are lots of freshly picked red berries and crunchy freshness. Ends a touch powdery and salty which is enjoyable. No Petit Verdot in the blend as it all went into the grand vin. 3.52 pH.

Leve Jeff

Cedar, tobacco leaf, and black currants form the core of the wine on the nose and on the medium-bodied, vibrant, crisp palate. Drink this over the next decade or so. Drink from 2026–2036. 89–91 pts.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicately floral heart cherry, a hint of oak, some cassis. Medium body, fine red cherry fruit, vivid tannins, fresh structure, salty, some nougat on the finish.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

This has plum and black cherry compote notes that show a buried juicy edge while singed vanilla bean and tobacco add depth through the finish. Modest range but solidly built. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2027 through 2033.

A fresh, well-balanced second wine from Pauillac by Château Haut-Batailley

The estate

Created in 1941 when the Batailley estate was divided between the two branches of the Borie family, Château Haut-Batailley is a 5th Grand Cru Classé from Pauillac. Since 2017, the estate has belonged to the Cazes family, who also own Lynch-Bages.

The vineyard

This Pauillac vineyard stretches over 41 hectares of fine Garonne gravel resting on clay subsoils. These exceptional terroirs allow the grape varieties to fully flourish and express their typicity.

The vintage

The 2023 vintage is described as a “vintage of adaptation.” The winter, mild yet changeable, alternated between dry periods and rainy spells. Careful work in the vines preserved the grapes’ optimal health. The berries reached perfect ripeness. The early, smooth harvest took place from September 14 to October 2, 2023, yielding a healthy crop of very high quality.

Vinification and aging

The Verso 2023 grapes were handpicked with selective sorting in the vineyard and again on the sorting table. Aging took place for 12 months in once-used French oak barrels.

Grape varieties

The blend for Verso 2023 is 63% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Sauvignon.
