Robert Parker

Mark Squires

The 2018 Quinta da Leda is a blend of 41% Touriga Franca, 34% Touriga Nacional, 13% Tinto Cão and 12% Tinta Roriz, aged for 18 months in an equal mixture of new and used French oak. It comes in at 13.9% alcohol. Showing some charred beef on the finish, this does have the advantage of somewhat more sedate tannins—somewhat. This has good juicy fruit, but it doesn't seem as classic as some years in the flavor profile. It's a good but not really great Leda. Here, unlike with the 2017, the fruit doesn't compensate for some rusticity.

Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

A rich red that offers both freshness and grace, integrating fine-grained tannins and generous flavors of pureed black raspberry, black plum reduction, mountain herbs and flowers. Silky on the palate, with dark hints of cocoa powder, fig cake, cedar and olive emerging on the firm finish. Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cão and Tinta Roriz. Drink now through 2038. 6,667 cases made, 350 cases imported.

James Suckling

Blackcurrants, cassis, baked blueberries, violets, sandalwood and hot stones on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with velvety, integrated tannins. Plush, yet fresh and weightless. Excellent texture. Try after 2023.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Deep dark ruby garnet, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Ripe plums, black forest berries, a fine touch of slate, a hint of precious wood, inviting, youthful bouquet. Medium complexity, dark fruit, ripe tannins, mineral-salty finish, a harmonious food companion.

Description

A Douro red wine with a seductive richness and vivacity

The estate

Owned by the Sogrape Group, one of the most important Portuguese wine producers, Casa Ferreirinha is synonymous with one word: outstanding. Founded in the 18th century by Bernardo Ferreira, the house is renowned for its in-depth knowledge of the Douro vineyards and for the quality of its wines. Casa Ferreirinha was the first winery in Portugal to produce non-fortified Douro red wines.

The wine

This 2018 Quinta Da Leda from Casa Ferreirinha is a fine Douro wine. With its complexity and elegance, this Portuguese red wine is one of the finest references in the Casa Ferreirinha range.

The vintage

The winter was cold and dry. The heavy rainfall during spring had an impact on the flowering and led to a sanitary pressure on the vineyard, resulting in low yields. Despite hot and dry summer conditions, water stress was minimal thanks to sufficient water reserves. The grapes harvested boast a high quality.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand and are first sorted in the vineyard and at the entrance to the winery. Destemming and soft crushing precede the vinification in stainless steel tanks. Long and gentle maceration to optimise extraction. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (50% new). Bottled without filtration.

The blend

Touriga Franca (41%)
