Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for House of Hazelwood's Spirit of Scotland 46 Years Old
Tasting
Appearance
Spirit of Scotland 46 Years Old displays a light gold hue, the result of a long maturation in American oak hogsheads that never sought to darken the spirit excessively. This luminous colour, achieved without any added colouring, faithfully reflects the influence of the wood over almost half a century.
Nose
The nose reveals a warm character of syrup, treacle and pastry aromas, alongside older notes reminiscent of handwritten paper and antique books. Hints of leather and baking spices enrich this first impression, while layers of ripe orchard fruit and zested mandarin, coated in vanilla cream, bring freshness and complexity to the whole.
Palate
The palate unveils a touch of subtle smoke, bright flashes of lemon tart and a mouthwatering quality that draws out the tasting experience. Notes of vanilla and aromatic smoke mingle with a malty, cereal backbone for a palate of great finesse. The long, wonderfully smooth finish rounds everything off without the slightest harshness, in a balance that is remarkable for a whisky of this age.
Pairings and tasting occasions
Produced in a strictly limited edition, this collector's whisky lends itself above all to contemplative tasting, enjoyed neat to fully appreciate the richness of aromas developed over 46 years. Its natural strength of 43.6% vol., drawn directly from the cask without standardised reduction, invites you to savour it slowly, ideally at room temperature, so that the full complexity of its aromatic profile can express itself.
Mixology
An exceptional whisky born of a remarkable double maturation, Spirit of Scotland 46 Years Old is best enjoyed neat and unembellished, preserving the integrity of an aromatic profile shaped by 46 years of patience.
A commemorative blended Scotch whisky born of Speyside family reserves
House of Hazelwood: the family reserve of Scotch whisky's first family
House of Hazelwood is an independent bottler dedicated to showcasing the private stocks of Scotch whisky amassed over almost a century by the Gordon family, owners of William Grant & Sons. Its name comes from Hazelwood House, the family residence near Dufftown, in the heart of Speyside, Scotch whisky's emblematic region. Launched in 2022, the brand draws on what is described as the world's largest reserve of aged Scotch whisky, spanning seven decades and every Scottish region. House of Hazelwood remains legally controlled by William Grant & Sons Management Limited, the current owner of the business, which also owns Glenfiddich, The Balvenie and the Girvan grain distillery. Each bottling, conceived as a unique and unrepeatable piece, embodies the house philosophy: telling a singular story through rare casks and exceptional blends.
Spirit of Scotland 46 Years Old: a historic blend shaped by 46 years of patience
Spirit of Scotland 46 Years Old is a Blended Scotch Whisky created in 1994 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the first official mention of Scotch whisky in the Exchequer Rolls of 1494. Rather than being bottled shortly after its creation, this blend continued to evolve for a further 28 years in American oak hogsheads, bringing its total age to 46 years at the time of bottling. This exceptionally long maturation gives the whisky a complete integration of its malt and grain components, resulting in a profile described as “fully unified”.
Bottled at 43.6% vol., without chill filtration or added colouring, Spirit of Scotland 46 Years Old belongs to House of Hazelwood's Legacy Collection, in which it stands as the oldest expression. Its production is strictly limited, with each bottle presented in a hand-labelled, individually numbered decanter, reinforcing its status as a collector's piece. Through its dual commemorative timeline and extended maturation, this whisky thus embodies a genuine fragment of the history of Scottish distilling.
