Tasting characteristics and advice for the Foursquare Mandamus Exceptional Cask Selection
Tasting
Colour
Deep amber colour.
Nose
The nose reveals remarkable complexity, with notes of blackberry jam, ripe pineapple and tangy plum. Aromas of cherry, golden raisins and caramel follow, alongside spicy hints of ginger. Notes of hazelnut, walnut and blackcurrant complete this generous bouquet.
Palate
On the palate, it is supple and generous, carried by ripe black cherries, raspberries and Victoria plums. A touch of orange zest brings freshness to the whole. The finish is long, woody and lightly smoky.
Serving suggestions and tasting moments
This exceptional rum is best enjoyed neat and at room temperature, to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and its power at 57% ABV.
Mixology
Given its outstanding character and limited release, we recommend enjoying this rum unadulterated in order to savour its full richness.
Additional information
Bottled at natural strength without chill filtration, this rum contains no added sugar, no colouring and no other additives. It is the result of a double distillation that combines a triple Coffey column and a pot still with a column and two retorts.
An exceptional Barbados rum, aged for 16 years
This rum from Barbados benefits from an exceptional 16-year double maturation: 10 years in ex-bourbon casks, followed by 6 years in former Tawny Port casks. This complex ageing lends Mandamus its unique aromatic richness, bringing together black fruits, spices and woody notes. Made from locally sourced sugarcane molasses, this Single Blended Rum perfectly illustrates Foursquare’s mastery of the art of blending. Personally selected by Richard Seale, Master Distiller and Master Blender, Mandamus represents the 29th release in the Exceptional Cask Selection series. Limited to 1,350 bottles for France, this edition highlights the rare and highly sought-after nature of this bottling.
Foursquare, the benchmark distillery in Barbados
Founded in 1995 by Richard Seale on the site of a former 18th-century sugar factory, Foursquare has established itself as an essential reference for Barbados rum. Family-owned by the Seales, this Caribbean distillery combines tradition and modernity thanks to outstanding equipment: a triple Coffey column operating under vacuum to preserve aromas, and a pot still with a column and two retorts. Foursquare stands out for its uncompromising philosophy: no added sugar, no artificial colouring, no chill filtration. Its limited editions in the Exceptional Cask Selection series, such as the 16-year-old Mandamus, perfectly illustrate the excellence of its complex blends and its authentic know-how.
Mandamus, a rare bottling from the Exceptional Cask Selection series
Foursquare Mandamus Exceptional Cask Selection is a particularly sought-after bottling from the Barbadian distillery. Produced using Foursquare’s traditional method, this rum combines distillates from a triple Coffey column, which can operate under vacuum to preserve delicate aromas, and a pot still equipped with a column and two retorts. This double distillation delivers an aromatic profile of great complexity. The choice of maturation casks reflects Richard Seale’s expertise: after an initial 10-year ageing period in ex-bourbon casks, the rum continues its development for a further 6 years in casks that previously held Tawny Port. This double maturation brings out intense fruity notes of red and black fruits, while preserving the woody structure characteristic of Barbados rums. Bottled at 57% ABV without any chill filtration, Mandamus retains the full spectrum of its aromas and its natural texture.
