Caroni: the story of a legendary Trinidad and Tobago distillery

Founded in 1918 in Trinidad and Tobago, Caroni established itself as one of the island’s three main distilleries under the leadership of Tate & Lyle from 1936. Located inland from Port-d'Espagne, it enjoyed unique independence thanks to its own sugarcane plantation. Gradually nationalized by the Trinidadian state between 1970 and 1975, the distillery closed permanently in 2002. Today, the historic stocks are mainly owned by the Italian bottler Velier, which acquired nearly 1,600 casks. This Trinidad and Tobago rum, originally intended for British Navy blends, has become the most sought-after reference among collectors, making Caroni an unmissable legend.
