The estate
Founded in the 1990s by Makis Mavridis, a viticultural agronomist, and Angelos Iatridis, an oenologist trained in Bordeaux, Alpha Estate embodies the revival of Greek winegrowing. Established in Amyndeon in Macedonia, the estate farms 220 hectares of vineyards between 620 and 710 meters above sea level, on a remarkable terroir surrounded by lakes and mountains. Still run by its founders, Alpha Estate stands out for its innovative approach that combines environmental stewardship with modern techniques, producing contemporary Greek wines of exceptional elegance.
The vineyard
Ecosystem Fumé 2024 is a Greek wine from the single block “Kaliva”, a 2.33-hectare plot located in the Amyndeon winegrowing area, in Indication Géographique Protégée Florina. Planted in 1999, this vineyard reaches 632 meters in altitude, with a north-west exposure facing Mount Voras. The Sauvignon Blanc vines grow on a silty clay-sandy soil over calcareous conglomerates, providing adequate drainage.
Winemaking and aging
After destemming and optical sorting of the grapes, Sauvignon Blanc Ecosystem Fumé 2024 undergoes gentle crushing followed by skin-contact maceration under an inert atmosphere. Alcoholic fermentation is carefully controlled using indigenous flora isolated specifically from this block, in fine-grained Tronçais white oak barrels with a light toast. Aging then continues for seven months in barrels, with regular stirring of the fine lees.
Grape variety
This white wine from Macedonia and Thrace is 100% Sauvignon Blanc.
