Description
A fruit-forward Fronsac wine
The estate
Château de Carles overlooks the Isle Valley, in the middle of the Fronsac appellation, in the Bordeaux region. This 14th century building took on its current appearance during the Renaissance, when the greatest minds of France, such as Montaigne and La Boétie, rubbed shoulders. The vineyard was planted 120 years ago, and is still cultivated today after 4 generations.
The vineyard
Extending over nearly 15 hectares, this vineyard of the Fronsac appellation is planted in clay and clay-limestone soils on molasse. The 35-year-old vines are cultivated in a responsible and traditional way with grassing and ploughing.
The winemaking and ageing
Manual harvest in crates from September 26 to October 10. Densitimetric sorting. Plot-by-plot vinification by gravity. Ageing from 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels. Thermo-regulated winery. Fining with fresh egg whites.
The blend
Merlot (96%), cabernet franc (4%)
The tasting
This Haut-Carles 2019 from Château de Carles reveals the fruit of Merlot, complemented by a delicate woodiness and a creamy palate. It will evolve to become much more complex over time.
