Description
Delicious and refined, a sweet wine from Barsac
The estate
Château Coutet is located in the Barsac appellation in the Sauternes region. In 1787, Thomas Jefferson, future president of the United States, believed that Château Coutet was the best Sauternes in Barsac. The word "Coutet" is derived from the Gascon word for knife. This word perfectly sums up the unique style of the estate's wines, which are sharp, lively and fresh.
The vineyard
Château Coutet 2021 is a Barsac wine made from a vineyard whose grape varieties are composed of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.
The vintage
A very cold start to the winter season, marked by 15 days of sub-zero temperatures, preceded a dry end of season and a favourable start to spring with temperatures that enabled bud break to take place at the end of Marchh. The frost on April 7th had a strong impact on the vineyard. The vegetative slowdown following the frost was enhanced by the drought and the cool temperatures which delayed the growth of secondary buds. Subsequently, two months of rainfall boosted the development of the vineyard until mid-July. The dry and cool summer was punctuated by thunderstorms at the beginning of August, which launched the ripening process. The humidity in mid-September favoured the start of botrytisation. The harvest, which took place between September 30th and October 18th, was carried out in good conditions. Foggy mornings and sunny afternoons were ideal conditions for harvesting grapes affected by noble rot.
